Cyclamen - My favorite winter bloom. So fresh and delicate looking and mostly hardy against frost for specific varieties. No need to plant close to awning as or cover as they can withstand the occasional frost we get here in nor cal just fine. And it comes in such cheerful colors.

Pansy- By and large this is a great winter bloom that makes your garden or yard look like spring all winter long.

Primula-
Can be a great winter bloom in some areas not prone to extreme frost. Under an awning or next to a little light cover can help this be a good winter choice.

Why aeration?
Overtime your yard's soil can become hard and compacted making it hard for young roots to penetrate. Additionally, this compactions make the flow and transference of water, minerals and air to roots more difficult. Older roots can sometimes sustain themselves, but turn dark and dingy over seasons. New growth needs aeration. Aeration each season will provide a chance for young roots to take hold and give you young fresher looking blades.
